在Steve Jobs的傳記即將發售的前夕，作者Walter Isaacson在GAWKER刊出了一小段書摘，揭露了Steve Jobs總是穿著黑色高領毛衣（black turtlenecks）的祕密……
Over the years, the uniforms developed their own signatures styles, especially at companies such as Sony, and it became a way of bonding workers to the company. “I decided that I wanted that type of bonding for Apple,” Jobs recalled.
Sony, with its appreciation for style, had gotten the famous designer Issey Miyake to create its uniform. It was a jacket made of rip-stop nylon with sleeves that could unzip to make it a vest. So Jobs called Issey Miyake and asked him to design a vest for Apple, Jobs recalled, “I came back with some samples and told everyone it would great if we would all wear these vests. Oh man, did I get booed off the stage. Everybody hated the idea.”
In the process, however, he became friends with Miyake and would visit him regularly. He also came to like the idea of having a uniform for himself, both because of its daily convenience (the rationale he claimed) and its ability to convey a signature style. “So I asked Issey to make me some of his black turtlenecks that I liked, and he made me like a hundred of them.” Jobs noticed my surprise when he told this story, so he showed them stacked up in the closet. “That’s what I wear,” he said. “I have enough to last for the rest of my life.”
在1980年代早期到日本的旅行中，Jobs詢問Sony的主席盛田昭夫，為何每個人在工廠裡都穿著制服。他告訴Jobs，由於在戰後沒有人有衣服可穿，諸如Sony等公司必須提供員工日常的穿著。
經過許多年之後，制服逐漸發展出各自的特徵樣式，特別是在Sony等公司。制服也成為了公司與員工之間情感聯繫的一種方式。「我決定我想要讓Apple也有這樣的聯繫。」Jobs回憶。
Sony懂得鑑賞設計，並聘請了知名的設計師三宅一生來設計制服。制服是一件夾克，使用防撕裂的尼龍布縫製，並且有一個可以用拉鍊拆開的袖子，讓制服變成背心。於是Jobs詢問三宅一生，請他為Apple設計一件背心。
Jobs回憶：「我帶著一些樣品回到公司，並且詢問所有人，如果大家都穿著一樣的背心，是不是個很棒的主意。不過我在台上只聽到噓聲，所有人都恨死了這個想法。」
不過在這段過程中，他成了三宅一生的好朋友，並且會定期拜訪他。由於日常的便利性（Jobs自己宣稱的理由）以及可以傳達一種如簽名般的特徵，他想到了給自己一件制服這個主意。
「於是，我請三宅幫我製作一些我喜歡的那種黑色高領毛衣，於是他幫我做了大概有一百件。」當Jobs告訴我這個故事，發現我很驚訝後，他向我展示了他衣櫥裡堆積的東西。
「這就是我穿的玩意。我有夠多的衣服可以穿一輩子了。」他說。
