目前Apple的產品大多數都是由Foxconn在大陸生產，Apple自己並未建立任何工廠。不過和洋風找出了一段Apple早期的影片，介紹了20多年前Macintosh的生產過程。
當時的Macintosh工廠由Apple自行設立，是電腦業界最早採用先進自動化技術與即時生產系統的工廠之一，並且模仿的是另一間你我所熟知的消費性電子產品製造商 。根據曾任Apple CEO的John Sculley敘述：
I remember Akio Morita gave Steve and me each one of the first Sony Walkmans. None of us had ever seen anything like that before because there had never been a product like that. This is 25 years ago and Steve was fascinated by it. The first thing he did with his was take it apart and he looked at every single part. How the fit and finish was done, how it was built.
He was fascinated by the Sony factories. We went through them. They would have different people in different colored uniforms. Some would have red uniforms, some green, some blue, depending on what their functions were. It was all carefully thought out and the factories were spotless. Those things made a huge impression on him.
The Mac factory was exactly like that. They didn’t have colored uniforms, but it was every bit as elegant as the early Sony factories that we saw. Steve’s point of reference was Sony at the time. He really wanted to be Sony. He didn’t want to be IBM. He didn’t want to be Microsoft. He wanted to be Sony.
我記得盛田昭夫給了我與Steve一人一台Sony Walkman。我們從來沒有見過像這樣的東西，因為沒有產品曾經是那樣製造出來的。這是在25年前的事，Steve完全著迷了。他拿到Walkman之後的第一件事，就是把它拆開來，並仔細研究每個小零件。
他同時也迷上了Sony的工廠。當我們到那邊的時候，每個人都有不同顏色的制服。一部分的人是紅色的，還有綠色與藍色，顏色是由他們負責的職位來區分。這一切都經過小心的規劃，而工廠本身也是一塵不染。這些事對他造成了很大的衝擊。
而Mac的生產工廠就完全像這樣。雖然沒有彩色的制服，不過每個細節都如同他所見的Sony工廠一樣優雅。Steve參考的就是當時的Sony，他真的想要成為Sony。他不想成為IBM、也不想成為Microsoft，他想要成為Sony。
